Song Analysis Ko Ko by Charlie Parker

ORDER NOW

Assignment calls on you to discuss and write about the musical, cultural, and political significance of the song or tune you are interpreting and analyzing("Ko-Ko" by Charlie Parker). Each song or tune is different in all three of these respects, and because of this, it is impossible to assign specific weights or percentages to the musical, cultural, and political dimensions.  Plus, I want you to have the freedom to make your own observations and interpretations about the significance of the song or tune. However, there are nevertheless certain things that I am looking for.  First, I expect you to try to discuss all three of these dimensions, keeping in mind what I just said about each song or tune being different in terms of which dimension or dimensions are most important.  Second, I am looking to see how well you apply and integrate what we have studied and learned in this class to the song or tune you are interpreting.  Third, here’s a hint about how to think about politics:  It isn’t just about specific events like elections or political movements like the Civil Rights movement; it’s also, more broadly, about power relationships and experiences in terms of things like race, gender, class, poverty, oppression, freedom, democracy, etc…  And finally, keep in mind to try to engage the rest of class in the interpretation of the music.
