  1. 1. Focus on question
literature reviews at Masters level must address the research question.
    2. Understanding of the topic
literature reviews at Masters level must demonstrate an understanding of the essay topic and of the relevant theoretical and methodological issues.
    3. Development of argument
literature reviews at Masters level should be structured and show a clear and balanced development of argument, which is coherent and supported with appropriate references. Whilst range is important, examples provided should be expanded sufficiently to demonstrate understanding.
    4. Critical insight, evaluation and originality
literature reviews at Masters level should show evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of differing arguments, theories and findings rather than just describing or reporting them. Evidence of independent thinking and reinterpretation of the literature is expected to demonstrate originality (e.g. this might be by providing new insights or perspectives or be demonstrated by the content or structure of the literature review).
    5. Use of source material
literature reviews at Masters level should demonstrate evidence of independent research and reading. Relevant literature should be referenced to demonstrate understanding and strengthen any arguments made.

The following presentational features are also included in determining the overall mark:

Referencing - References should be cited where appropriate in the text and listed at the end and should follow the APA referencing conventions.
Overall presentation - Clarity of expression and using a writing style that is appropriate for an academic writing assignment is really important; it is hard to credit understanding if an literature review is poorly presented (in terms of structure and logical development) and if the points and arguments being made are difficult to understand.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar - Primarily, it is ideas and understanding that are being assessed but marks may be lost if literature reviews have not been adequately proof read and contain a lot of spelling, punctuation and grammar errors, particularly if the errors result in sentences where the intended meaning of what is written is not clear.
