AN EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEMBERSHIP IN STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, AND ACADEMIC SUCESS FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS AT HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITIES

Recent research has spotlighted concerns about the academic success of African American college students. The purpose of this study was to determine if engagement in college impacts the academic success of African American students at a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Secondary data was obtained from The National Survey Student Engagement (NSSE) that measured the student engagement of African American students who were enrolled at 56 HBCUs that participated in the administration of the NSSE between 2011 and 2012. Leadership in student organizations, co-circular activities, participation in faculty research project and student athlete status data were extracted from the dataset, along with the five benchmark scores of student engagement.
