The current state of Somalia is the unification of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland.  The country became united as Somalia in 1960.  Major languages are Somali and May-may. Geographically the country is situated at the tip end of the Horn of Africa, it borders Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, Indian Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Aden to the north and Kenya to the southwest.  The country takes pride in having the longest coast 3000km in Africa; its terrain consists of savannah and highlands. The country has two major rivers and numerous perennial rivers locally known as "dooxo".  Climate of the country is mainly dry. Rainfall is highly seasonal and varies significantly across the country.  The areas with most rainfall lie in the centre and south, especially the middle Shabelle which receives around 31 inches per annum.  However, north part of Somalia the climate is more arid. Major rain fall occurs March to May (Monsoon), light rain falls in September to December; temperature most of the year remain the same between 210C to 310C.  The country has in resent years become more prone to droughts.  The hottest months are July and August, temperature could reach up to 390C.
