Try to be as detailed as possible when describing the windshield survey.
Windshield survey:
• Age and general appearance of housing including space between houses, construction, and presence of central air conditioning, heating, and plumbing.
• Describe the amount, condition, and use of open space, and if it safe and attractive.
• Where do people congregate, who congregates, and when?
• Describe transportation, and how people get from place to place, is there public transportation, how effective is it? What is it? Do people ride bikes?
• Do you see evidence of social services like recreation centers, parks, social services, doctor and dentist offices, pharmacies?
• Stores and where the community shops, groceries, fresh produce?
• Street people and animals, what do you see on the streets during the day? Are animals loose or contained?
• What is the condition of the area, is it well kept or do you see trash, abandoned cars, what information is on the signs and bill boards in the community?
• What is the race of people you see and do you see signs of ethnicities? Places of worship, food stores, restaurants? Are signs in English?
• What indictors do you see of types of religion the residents practice?
• Do you see evidence of clinics, hospitals, mental illness, and substance abuse?
• What indicators do you see regarding politics? Posters, signs, headquarters noted?
• Do you see media indicators like TV, radio, newspaper?
• What types of business exists? Do you see large employers, small business owners, retail, hospitality industry, military, or do people have to seek employment elsewhere?


• Physical & Psychosocial Characteristics of the community – The community is East Baton Rogue Louisiana
• Physical
• Include how long the community has existed
• Pertinent demographic data about the community members such as age, race, gender, ethnicity, education, income, housing, and density of the population
• Psychosocial
• Religion
• Socioeconomic level
• Education level
• Occupation
• Data specific to the problem being assessed: Looking at Violent crimes specific to East Baton Rouge, Louisiana and LSU (crimes such as homicide, rape, domestic abuse, and theft)…Please use statistical data (up to 10 years ago) and present data to compare and show an increase in violence in this area.
• Extent of the problem
• Incidence & prevalence
• Mortality and morbidity rates
• Presence of vulnerable groups
• Populations with at-risk behaviors
• Level of social functioning
• Analyze all data collected by comparing it to historical, state, and/or national data
• Identify the supra system of the community (East Baton Rouge, Louisiana) and briefly explain the significance
• Once the boundaries of the community are defined, anything outside the boundary system becomes the supra system
• The environment external to, or outside of the community that affects the community
• Include things like money, facilities, human services, health information, and legislation if applicable

Interview (Only include this section if possible…)
• Interview at least 3 appropriate community residents (key informants, community leaders, and/or community members impacted by the issue) to gather information/perspectives regarding the identified problem
• These individuals are the richest sources of information about their health status, interests, community problems and strengths, and possible solutions
• Write 3 separate paragraphs
• Vulnerable populations can be targeted
