After screening Field of Dreams and Cobb, write an essay that relates Realism, Classicism and Formalism from Chapters 1 & 8, & 11, Understanding Movies. Use the theories to help construct a comparison and contrast essay of these two films. Both films are discussed in Reel Baseball and several interviews in Reel Baseball (Ron Shelton, Phil Alden Robinson, Kevin Costner, Rod Dedeaux and James Earl Jones) need to be worked into your analysis.

Also, your favorite quotation from any of the interviews relevant to this assignment, should be artfully worked in to your introductory paragraph. Be specific; quote and cite the texts and include specific examples from the films. In your closing paragraph, indicate which film you think is a better film, and why.

In preparation for this assignment: read chapters 1, 8 & 11 (Understanding Movies), read chapters 3, and 6, and parts of chapters15, 16, and 17 (Reel Baseball) as appropriate; chapter 3, Stars, Stripes and Diamonds; screen both Field of Dreams and Cobb; draft your essay; edit your essay; submit your essay to me via Sakai’s “Assignments” under “Film Theory 2.” As always, a bibliography and filmography are expected.
