"For this first full-length essay of the semester, pick whichever one of Homer’s elaborate epic similes that catches your interest the most from the index of Odyssey simile provided. There are several dozen of these to choose from throughout the poem. (The index lists only the book and line number where each simile begins; it is your job to check what is being compared to what in the passages cited from the text). Once you have chosen the simile, write an essay both 1) analyzing the language of the simile and 2) showing its significance for the poem as a whole. Your paper should have an introduction, body, and conclusion; at the end of the essay’s introductory paragraph, your thesis statement should introduce the main point that your analysis and interpretation will support."
