Essay Topic:
According to what you heard in class and the arguments presented in the Prohibition articles, do you believe that Prohibition was a success or failure? You must support your answer using only the readings. The essay should include:
1) a creative, exciting title
2) an engaging opening sentence
3) a strong introduction that summarizes the arguments of both historians (Kyvig and Burnham), chooses a side on the issue, and states several reasons in support—THESIS STATEMENT
4) several body paragraphs, each of which explain one of these reasons, and
5) a clear conclusion that agrees with your introduction and reiterates your thesis statement.
Guidelines for Essay:
1) READ THIS AND FOLLOW FORMATTING RULES: The essay must be no less than THREE and no more than FOUR pages long; 12 point font Times-New Roman; double-spaced with one inch margins—no other lengths of formats will be accepted. CHANGE DEFAULTS IF NECESSARY.
2) You can quote important statements relevant to supporting your thesis. Don’t quote over five consecutive words.
The only source to be used for this assignment is the reading posted on Blackboard. DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES!!! Not giving credit to the original author/publisher is plagiarism. Please use parenthesis and cite the proper page at the end of the sentence. If you are using direct quotes, please use quotation marks. A simple pair of parentheses before the period of the sentence with the page number will suffice. For example:
District Judge Darryl Buttersworth, in his unpublished novel, argued that the history of using quotes effectively in essays should be acknowledged as “the foundation of civilization” (42).
3) Include a creative, exciting title with your essay. NO TITLE PAGE or WORKS CITED PAGE.
