Description:
Prompt: A 4-page (minimum) paper that closely examines some literary element from one of our class readings. Writing About American Literature explains (see p. 17-18). Do not use outside sources. Pick any of the works we study and look closely at some aspect of the work and analyze how that element contributes to the works major theme. The elements of fiction are plot, setting, motif, conflicts, character, tone, point of view, style and so on; elements of poetry include figurative language (metaphor, simile, etc.), rhythm, meter, theme; essays draw on rhetorical strategies (argument and logic), evidence, diction, tone. All are driven by purpose and are aimed at particular audiences. The paper should be well-organized with a clear, explicit thesis and supporting points. Typically, this paper that zeros in on some aspect of the work itself and how it works, not the author’s biography or the works context. Include an additional works cited page for the work itself.
