Description:
This is a two-part essay to be written for a mandatory course on European Civilization at a University.
In total, the essay is supposed to be 10 pages long (technically 10-12 pages, but 10 is fine), so each of the two parts should probably be roughly 5 pages long. I would be open to separating the work, so if you would rather just give me a quote for one part, I would be open to that (though I would really prefer getting both parts done!). I"m writing the following to give you a quick idea of the scope of this assignment, though the full details are in the attachment.
Part 1:
For the first part, I am supposed to select 3 pairs of quotes (out of 6 total), identify the quotations (author, source, date), and briefly explain the significance of each quote in its own context. I"m also supposed to "analyze as fully as you can the broad historical issues raised by the juxtaposition of the two quotations." (the instructions are on the attachment)
Again, this part should be ~5 pages long, so writings on each of the pairs of quotes should probably take up around ~1.66 pages each.
The assignment doesn"t say where the quotes are from explicitly, but it wasn"t hard to look up. I did so, and the quotes that I am supposed to select from are from the following books (Some of the writings are rather short -- even as short as 6 pages --, and I can provide you with the texts if you don"t have them. Honestly, from what I can tell, what"s most important about this part is the "historical context", so this part could probably be done without knowing each and every the text that well):
Option 1:
A. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
B. On Liberty by J.S. Mill
Option 2:
A. Futurist Manifestoes
B. Diderot: The Definition of Encyclopedia
Option 3:
A. Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler
B. The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Option 4:
A. Principles of Legislation by Jeremy Bentham
B. The Conspiracy of Equals by Babeuf
Option 5:
A. On the Emancipation of the Negroes by Viefville des Essars
B. The Jewish State by Theodor Herzl
Option 6:
A. Duties to Country by Giuseppe Mazzini
B. Diderot: The Definition of Encyclopedia
Part 2:
Again, this should be ~5 pages long (but what"s most important is that the total of Part 1 and Part 2 adds up to 10 pages).
The exact prompts are given in the attachment, but for this part I have to choose 1 prompt out of 3 to write about. Also, I can provide you with any texts you don"t have.
The prompts are from the following books:
Option 1:
(Choose 3 out of the 4)
A. "Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind" by Condorcet
B. "Reflections on the Revolution in France" by Edmund Burke
C. "On the Phalanstery" by Charles Fourier
D. Civilization and Its Discontentts by Sigmund Freud
Option 2:
A. Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi
B. On the Concentration Camps by Bruno Bettelheim
C. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
Option 3:
A. "Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind" by Condorcet
B. "On Liberty" by J.S. Mill
C. "The Young People of Today" by Massis & de Tarde
D. Mein Kampf by Hitler or "The Doctrine of Fascism" by Mussolini (teacher just stated we should discuss the "fascism of Mussolini and Hitler", so these are the texts we"ve read by them)
