Write a paper about a historically significant event, organization, or person in North Carolina history. Form an original thesis about your topic and defend that thesis with good primary and secondary sources. (Do not just write a “report” like you did in middle or high school.) Make sure there are plenty of sources for this topic. Put the subject into NC context, including substantial analysis of at least one of the following themes: uniqueness, isolation, and East-West differences. Email me, or meet with me in office hours, to discuss planning the paper; this is your responsibility.
Outside sources must consist of primary sources (from that time period) approved by your professor and secondary sources (journal articles and books written by professional historians). Stay away from weak sources such as Wikipedia, recent magazines and newspapers, online blogs, and low-quality websites. The more good outside sources you use, the better. Paraphrase the information from these sources in your paper; do not plagiarize or extensively quote. You can also use “inside” sources (class books).
Begin topic shopping with our class books, and the North Carolina Historical Review, and use the library’s website for appropriate books and journal articles (see JSTOR and America History & Life for journal articles); if in doubt about topics and sources, ask your helpful professor!
The essay should be 5-6 typed (12 point, Times New Roman) double-spaced full pages with “Chicago style” footnotes and bibliography.
Papers will be graded based on: outside sources, NC context, writing quality (including citations), specific evidence, and quality of analysis. Grades decline for anything shorter or substantially longer, poorly written, or lightly noted. Papers plagiarized, lacking sources, or not on NC history will receive a 0%. Late papers will not be accepted (unless the reason was beyond the student’s control and was fully documented); better on time and bad (50%?) than late (0%).
