Guidelines for Typewritten Work Using MLA Style

Use this as a model for your typewritten work. Print your essay on DIN A4 paper, and make sure that the printer has enough ink for the print to be easy to read. Use the font Times New Roman 12. Everything (including your name, the date, title, etc.) should be double-spaced—not single- or triple-spaced—and should be printed on only one side of the paper.

Leave all margins at the standard default width (top, left and right: 2.5 cm; bottom: 2 cm). In the upper-left corner, put your name and other pertinent information as you see above.  For work longer than one page, put page numbers in the upper-right corner. It is also a good idea to include your last name in the header so the instructor can easily reassemble your work if a page gets detached and mixed in with other papers. To do this, go to “Kopf- und Fußzeile,” then tab over until your cursor is at the right side of the header box. Type your last name, add one space, and then select the page number using the          button in the little “Kopf- und Fußzeile” box. Then select “Schließen.” An example is provided in the upper-right corner of this page. If you have trouble adding your last name, skip this part.

Now hit the “enter” key once and type your title. Follow MLA conventions for title format. They can be found in the MLA Handbook and the Little, Brown Handbook. After the title, hit “enter” again only once and start the first paragraph. Indent this and all subsequent paragraphs by hitting the tab key           once (the tab should be at the standard setting of 1.25 on the ruler or lineal). Use left-justified (“linksbündig”) and avoid dividing a long word at the end of a line. Finally, please staple together work that is two or more pages in length.
